After 7 years, we decided it was time for a new mattress. Well, it was more like our backs told us it was time for a new mattress.
We heard great things about Tuft & Needle, but because I have Degenerative Disc Disease, we were (and have always been) hesitant to buy any new mattress, let alone a foam mattress that comes in a box! Mattress shopping for me can be tricky, and I tend to be very picky. For my back’s needs, I always shop for firm mattresses.
The set up was incredibly easy. We pulled the mattress out of the box, unfolded it, cut open the plastic and pulled the plastic off. That's it! It inflated very quickly and we noticed it got to its full firmness within a day or so.
(All of the pictures below were taken the same day as set-up.)
The Look
The Original T&F Mattress has a very clean, simple look. It sits at 10” thick so I would recommend getting a traditional box spring or taller platform bed for this mattress. The platform bed we had when we got this mattress sat too low and the mattress didn’t feel high enough off the ground. So, we decided to buy a taller bed platform. This mattress has a soft, comfortable white cover over the foam that gives it a clean, minimalist look.

The Feel
This is where I was surprised. It is so soft to the touch, yet the most solid mattress I have ever slept on. When you lay on it, you don’t sink down. It provides a lot of support for your whole body. When my husband rolls over and I am laying next to him, I don’t feel movement in the mattress at all.

The Quality
The Original Tuft and Needle Mattress is about half the price as other foam mattress in a box companies, and this scared me to be honest. However, I don’t see this mattress becoming an issue anytime soon. It has a 10-year warranty and I read several reviews that this mattress lasted other people for years. We have only had it for a week, so I will keep you posted on how it feels with time.
As I mentioned before, all of the pictures in this post were taken the same day as set up, so you can tell the mattress hadn't quite taken it's full form and shape, yet. The following day, it did take it's full shape, especially around the corners.
We have been sleeping on this mattress for a week now, and still love it.
I plan to post another review in a few months or so, after we have slept on the mattress for a longer period of time.
Stay tuned!
The second week of sleeping on it, things changed. I started waking up frequently throughout the night with a sore upper back. Each night it only got worse. I didn't feel as rested when I woke up in the mornings, and my back was hurting more than it was with my 7 year old mattress.
So, you guessed it: we returned the mattress.
Overall, I gave this mattress 2.5/5 stars. It is convenient to buy and return (because it came in a box). The look and feel of the mattress was very clean and comfortable. My husband didn't have any issues sleeping on it, and didn't have any complaints. But this bed did not provide the support that my back needs.
I would not buy this (or any foam mattress, for that matter) again, and I would not recommend this bed to anyone that has any back issue.
I hope this review helps anyone out there!

Rolling this thing up was a little tricky, but my husband and I were able to "fold" it into thirds to then strap it. We were able to fit it into the back of our Jeep with the middle seats down.
Now, we have to figure out how to mattress shop during a pandemic. Wish us luck!
