Master Bedroom Flip -Accent Wall Part 1

I’m so excited to share some of the DIY projects that Kevin and I like to do in our home with you. We built our home 2 years ago! When we built, we made it a blank slate, so we could add our own cosmetic touches to it.

Currently, we are in the process of doing an accent wall in the Master Bedroom. We have endless ideas and plans for the rest of the house, but we are choosing to take the projects one at a time, room by room. Heard of the “one room challenge?” That’s what we hope to do!

Want to see a sneak peek of our Master bedroom? It’s a work in progress, so I will show you what we have so far!

This is where it all began. It is obviously a little cluttered and messy in these pictures. Sorry about that! Haha. It will only make for a better before & after, right?!

Anyways, our room has some great space and lots of natural light through our north-facing window. Kevin and I have wanted to make this space a place for us to come to at the end of our day to relax and spend time together. We hope to do the accent wall, add floating shelves in our nook, putting in a faux fireplace, and adding a sliding boor to the bathroom.

So let me show you our accent wall progress!

We used the Pythagorean Theorem to help us figure out dimensions and design for this project.

We used these MDF boards from Home Depot.

And we got to it! Using our Ryobi miter saw, we cut 45* and 90* angles according to our measurements. We put them up with liquid nail and a nail gun to secure them in place. We started hanging the border pieces, then the main diagonal piece, and then we continued with the rest from biggest to smallest.

Once all of the pieces were nailed up, we started using wood filler to fill in all of the nail holes and joints. Once that dried, we sanded and put joint compound over each joint. (We put wood filler in the joints before joint filler to help the joints appear seamless.) After the joint compound dried, some joints needed a little touch up layer, so we added a little more joint compound.

Next comes paint color! Any ideas of what we will go with?!
